The Open Data movement is internationally known for its demand of more governmental transparency and an easier access to public data. In the past few month the movement has taken off, gaining more and more attention, especially in Germany.

An important date for all activists is the upcoming Open Data Hackday in April 2010, a barcampstyle event over the course of two days.

The goal is to demonstrate what possible can be done with Open Data by just using a little bit of money, creativity and innovation. We want to create and build tools to highlight the possiblities of what could be done if public data were available and free of use for anyone.

“Our goal is to let politics and broad public know how easy it is to gain more transparency, easy access to open data and what kind of beautiful things can be done with it,“ says Daniel Dietrichs from the Opendata Network.

To accomplish its goals the event is reaching out to volunteers active in the fields of software engineering, design, web development, research and politics. But also everybody else who is interested and willing to participate is gladfully invited to join and make an important step towards “Open Politics“.
From the participants Dietrichs expects “creativ ideas and innovative implementations.“

The Hackday is brought to you by the Opendata Network in cooperation with HackdeOverheid from the Netherlands.

The concept:
- One Weekend + Hacker + Software Engeenres + Designer + The Press + and other geeks
- And: More or less open data from govermental institutions

- The result: A fully loaded trunk of applications to demonstrate how to use open data to create usefull websites and mashups alongside other tools with value for the general public.

Events similar to Hackday have already taken place in other countries such as the Netherlands, Australia and the US. Hopefully this will bet he first time in Germany.
